Welcome to the Open Records Department
The Open Records Department at The University of Texas at Austin is dedicated to public access to information, in line with the Texas Public Information Act (TPIA) and federal laws like the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), which protect student privacy. We strive to balance public transparency with state and federal confidentiality requirements, ensuring governmental affairs remain open, accessible, and accountable. Information on governmental affairs is presumed public unless protected by law, and we are committed to providing consistent, timely access to all requestors.
Our mission is to support and advance the University's educational, research, and public service goals through:
Compliance
Adhering to Texas and federal laws, including PIA and FERPA, to protect the privacy of student records while ensuring public information is accessible.
Transparency
Upholding the presumption that government records are public unless otherwise exempted by law, and promptly providing access to non-confidential information.
Consistent Treatment
Ensuring all requestors receive high-quality service with ADA-compliant accommodations.
